What is a Wine "Future"?
For the uninitiated, buying “wine futures” (or purchasing en primeur) is the historic practice of securing a wine while it is still actively aging in the barrel, long before it is bottled, labeled, and officially released.
At Keenan Winery, we take this concept a step further. Our Future Program isn’t just a pre-order of a standard vintage; it is a completely custom, one-of-a-kind blend created just once a year. No two years are ever alike. It is a liquid time capsule of a specific moment on Spring Mountain.
Once the wine has finished its barrel-aging journey, it is bottled, labeled, and shipped strictly and exclusively to the private collectors who pre-ordered it.
Where Art Meets Alchemy: The Story Behind the Labels
In recent years, the Future Program has evolved into a deeply personal blend of fine winemaking and fine art. Each year’s vintage features a bespoke name and a stunning, limited-edition label showcasing the wildlife that calls our St. Helena estate home.

The creative process between the winemaker and the photographer is a fascinating, two-way street:
The Image Inspires the Blend: Some years, a striking photograph of a hawk, owl, or songbird caught by Reilly’s lens inspires the sensory profile and attitude of the wine blend.
The Blend Inspires the Image: Other years, the unique personality of the barrel sample inspires Reilly to go out into the vineyards, track down, and photograph a specific bird that mirrors the wine’s character.
This symbiotic relationship ensures that every bottle is a true masterpiece, both inside and out.
The Golden Rule of the Future Program: Don't Wait
Because this is a true custom creation, there is a catch—and it’s one that catches many Napa wine collectors off guard.
“I only wish I had purchased more.” Year after year, this is the single most common piece of feedback we receive from our Future Program buyers once they finally uncork their bottles. Unfortunately, by then, it’s too late.
Keenan Winery only produces the exact amount of wine that is pre-ordered while it sits in the barrel. We do not keep a surplus for the tasting room, and it won’t be found on store shelves or restaurant wine lists. When the pre-order window closes, production is locked. Once the bottling line stops, that specific vintage is gone forever.
