River Locks on the Keenan Wine Cruise, Douro River, Portugal

Dev 06, 2023

In November 2023, Michael and Jennifer Keenan of Keenan Winery led a wine cruise on the Douro River in Portugal.

The installation of river locks has made the Douro River navigable by river cruise boats. In a sense, the locks are like water elevators. To say nothing of the fabulous wine and delicious foods everyone enjoyed, the locks were another of the many interesting experiences those who took the Keenan Douro River Wine Cruise enjoyed. This video gives a glimpse into the experience of riding up and down river locks on the Douro. One of the locks was, in fact, famous for having the biggest elevation change in Europe.

Carrapatelo’s Dam, built between 1964 and 1971, was the first dam on the Douro River. Its lock is roughly 279 feet long and 40 feet wide. The difference in the water level of this lock is about 115 feet, one of the highest dams in the world!

Pour yourself a glass of Keenan Wine and see this video of the locks.
