Crafted from what has become one of our most important single vineyard wines in our lineup, the 2018 Cabernet Franc from the Upper Bowl vineyard has dressed up as both the beauty and the beast for this vintage. This wine is in its initial stage of adolescence and as a result, the aromatic profile is a towering wall of undifferentiated candied and tart red fruits with a hint of sweet cocoa and crushed violets. I expect it will take a few years for these elements to assume the proper blocking on the stage of your nose and palate. For the time being this wine is certainly not as delicate as other recent vintages may have been.
Grown at 2000 feet, this wine presents the usual structure that we often capture from our mountain vineyard but the mouthfeel presents a little something extra. This wine is thick, almost like it has an additional level of viscosity to it.
It’s fun to drink now and experience its muscularity at full bore. You could also wait a decade and likely find that it’s dropped a weight class but gained it all back in the form of that classic pretty, lifted, and ethereal quality that we’ve come to expect from this vineyard and this wine. ~ Reilly
Here, my father and Keenan Winery President, Michael Keenan, talks about the 2018 Keenan Cabernet Franc and why it’s so special.
The 2018 Keenan Cabernet Franc Earns a Whopping 95 Points
“The 2018 Cabernet Franc Upper Bowl Vineyard is effusive and soaring in the glass. Crushed red berry, mocha, wild herbs, cinnamon, and blood orange lend an exotic air to the 2018 that is impossible to miss. The same can be said for the way the 2018 delivers so much fruit intensity without heaviness. It is such a gorgeous wine.”
