Robert Keenan 1996 Napa
Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
BEST OF TASTING
Excerpt from Dorothy J.Gaiter and John Brecher's
column,
"Tastings" in The Wall Street Journal
"Great Grapes, Wonderful Wines"
"For this tasting, we bought 50 Cabernets between $20 and $50...
"Our best of tasting was simply delicious. 'Black as night,' we
wrote.
'Intense blackberry nose. Dry, structured, a very serious wine. Long,
crisp, structured finish, with something extra in it, a kind of lemon-zest
zing that kind of tweaks it. Nice acids, great vitality. Bright.
This could only be American.'
"When we tore off the bag, this turned out to be the 1996 Cabernet
from
Robert Keenan Winery, which made us smile. We remember the first Chardonnay
we ever had from Keenan (in 1980, at the Coach House in New York City
on the
day Dottie was hired by the New York Times) and the first Cabernet Franc
(in
1993, at Capsouto Freres in New York City). The winery, which makes
a total
of 10,000 cases, made almost 2,300 cases of this wine, and it was
distributed in about 35 states when it was released last year (we got
a
bottle in Chicago). Keenan will release the 1998 later this year.
The '97 was softer and not as complex, the winery said, so it was
released before the 1996."
