What is Cabernet Franc?
This is a question I hear in
the tasting room quite often. It is not a blend of wines as many believe, but instead
it is a European grape variety. Cabernet Franc is one of the five red grape varieties
(Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are two others) grown
in Bordeaux, and it is present in many Bordeaux blends. Cabernet Franc produces a
relatively lighter and softer wine than Cabernet Sauvignon and is very fruity with
slight herbaceous notes in the nose.
It is common for Cabernet
Franc to be a component in
Cabernet Sauvignon wines produced in California as well, and it has been blended
into many of Keenanís Cabernet Sauvignons (and Merlots) over the years. Due to its
lighter body, Cabernet Franc softens the powerful Cabernet Sauvignon and adds complexity
to the wineís bouquet.
The 1999 Cabernet Franc shows deep
rich flavors with intense ripe black cherry and plum aromas. Hints of earth and slight
herbaceous notes add complexity as the wine opens up. This wine has wonderful structure
and will age for at least another five to seven years. Hope you enjoy this unique
wine as much as we do!
